ITALY

JUNE 15

Egan Church watched from a train car as rows of cypress trees whipped by the window. Sitting across from him was Matteo in a black tracksuit, speaking quietly into a mobile phone while keeping watch of Egan’s every move. He had a handgun tucked in the back of his pants, which seemed a rather unnecessary measure. Matteo was built like a tank. Even in proper health, Egan was no match for him. It made him wonder, though, how a young man like Matteo would come to choose this path over so many others. What could have possibly happened to him to make him become this monster? And a monster he was. He’d tortured Egan mercilessly and the son-of-a-bitch had done so by strappado. Dull pain still coursed through his shoulders—the haunting residuals of the rope. Egan had told Matteo what he wanted to hear, but it wasn’t enough. He wanted Egan to finish the job.

An odd anxiety gnawed at him as he thought about what was to come. He felt fear. Not fear of anyone or anything… but a fear of himself. For what he was being forced to do. He was a pawn—a prisoner. Almost virulent, like he was the host of something horrible. These men were trained killers. They would kill again and do so effortlessly. He was in way over his head and there would be no escape or compromise. No winning this game. Forever bound by it, Egan thought—those words now terrifyingly clear.

He would soon arrive at his destination, but his journey wouldn’t end there. He didn’t know where it would end… if at all.
